Average Annual Salary: $136,449 + $51,738 BONUS
This is the average annual salary, not the base pay, as featured in the job opportunity announcement. All calculations include CIVMAR total take-home pay (including overtime, penalty, etc.).
DUTIES
A recruitment incentive is authorized for eligible selectees. The actual amount is calculated as 25% of the base pay. The incentive is paid as a lump sum at the beginning of employment with the Command and requires a 3-year service agreement. CIVMAR (VEOA) candidates and Annuitants selected for employment as Electrician are not eligible for recruitment incentives.
The Chief Electrician is a Civil Service Mariner (CIVMAR) employed by the Navy to serve the Military Sealift Command (MSC) onboard naval auxiliaries and hybrid-manned warships worldwide, in peace and war. MSC exists to support the joint warfighter across the full spectrum of military operations. MSC provides on-time logistics, strategic sealift, and specialized missions anywhere in the world, in contested or uncontested environments.
The Electrician is responsible for maintaining, operating, and repairing the ship’s electrical systems, machinery, and equipment. This includes, but is not limited to, the ship’s service generators, emergency generators, main and auxiliary switchboards, emergency switchboards, lighting and power distribution panels, transformers, motor controllers, sound-powered phone systems, lighting circuits, alarm systems, batteries, ground detection systems, metering circuits, and electric motors onboard. The Electrician must be proficient in using power tools and light machine shop equipment, performing fire and damage control drills, and understanding the ship’s electrical system features for emergencies. The Electrician supervises Second Electricians, assists with quality assurance on repairs, researches parts, and maintains accurate machinery history reports. The role involves preparing work lists, drafting repair requests, and ensuring compliance with EEO policies. All other duties as assigned.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be a U.S. Citizen, at least 18 years old.
- Valid U.S. Passport with at least 7 months remaining.
- Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC) and/or Department of Defense (DOD) Common Access Card (CAC) with at least 10 months remaining.
- U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with at least 10 months remaining, endorsed as:
- Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED): QMED - Electrician, or QMED - Electrician/Refrigeration Engineer, or QMED - Any Engine Rating.
- STCW Certificate endorsed as Rating Forming Part of an Engineering Watch (RFPEW), Able Seafarer Engine.
