Job Title: Mechanical Designer Job Description
The Mechanical Designer will be responsible for the design and detailing of mechanical components and systems for custom automation equipment using Autodesk Inventor 3D and AutoCAD 2D. The role involves creating layouts, large assembly drawings, detailing, and heavy design of equipment such as gantries, robotic end-of-arm tooling, conveyor systems, material handling systems, and deburr systems. The designer will manage different projects from inception through installation, with a focus on ensuring the designs meet customer specifications and project requirements.
Responsibilities

Design and detail mechanical components and systems for custom automation equipment using Autodesk Inventor.

Develop 3D models, 2D drawings, and complete Bill of Materials (BOMs).

Collaborate with controls engineers to optimize mechanical designs for integration with electrical and control systems.

Participate in design reviews and incorporate feedback to improve functionality and manufacturability.

Perform engineering calculations to validate design integrity and performance.

Review customer specifications and ensure compliance with project requirements.

Support the build and debug phases of machine development, including occasional travel to customer sites.

Maintain documentation and revision control throughout the design lifecycle.
Essential Skills

Minimum of 4 years of recent experience in mechanical automated machinery design including robotic cells, conveyors, gantries, and end-of-arm tooling.

At least 2 years of experience with Inventor or SolidWorks, demonstrating expertise in design, detailing, and layouts of mechanical components.

Proficiency in Inventor, SolidWorks, mechanical engineering, layout design, detailing, fabrication, and robotic cell design.

Knowledge of GD&T and experience with automated machinery design.
Additional Skills & Qualifications

Experience with powertrain systems.

Ability to review and comply with customer specifications.

Strong collaboration skills for working with controls engineers.
Work Environment
The work environment is in a family-owned company with around 70 employees, operating only one shift. The facility is clean and odor-free, with the engineering team seated upstairs overlooking the plant floor where systems are built. The biggest customers include GM and Chrysler, and the engineering department consists of about 12 engineers/designers, with 4 on contract. The company offers a good clean working environment, paid overtime, and consistent performance feedback.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Whitmore Lake, Michigan.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $38.00 - $48.00/hr.
