The Sr. Accountant contributes to AHF by maintaining the integrity of general ledger accounts, bank reconciliations, and financial close procedures by ensuring all month-end journal entries are recorded and checklist updates are completed. Bringing expertise in accounting systems and financial analysis, the Sr. Accountant reviews and interprets complex transactions with professionalism, commitment, and accuracy, supporting AHF’s financial stability and operational excellence. The position enhances the reputation of AHF by supporting the financial reporting team within AHF’s Finance Department, ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of affiliate financial reporting. The Sr. Accountant will work as part of a close-knit team to ensure the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of affiliate financial reporting.
Responsibilities
- Maintain the integrity of general ledger accounts and perform bank reconciliations.
- Oversee financial close processes and month-end journal entries; ensure checklist updates are completed.
- Review and interpret complex transactions with accuracy and professionalism.
- Support financial reporting for affiliates; ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
- Collaborate with the Finance Department and program managers on budgeting and financial analysis.
- Support contract billing, invoicing, and tracking of reimbursable expenses in accordance with grant and contract terms.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field required. CPA or Master’s degree a plus.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a nonprofit setting.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and fund accounting.
- Experience with grant compliance, restricted funds, and donor reporting.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, Blackbaud, or similar).
- Strong Excel skills and ability to work with large data sets.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Knowledge of Areas and Travel
- Willingness and ability to travel as required for on-site audits, trainings, or support to affiliate locations.
- Preparing monthly journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Maintaining the general ledger and ensuring accurate and timely month-end and year-end close processes.
- Managing restricted funds, including tracking donor restrictions and releasing net assets in accordance with fulfillment of those restrictions.
- Overseeing grant accounting and compliance, including accurate allocation of expenses and recognition of grant revenue.
- Assisting in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Supporting annual external audits by preparing audit schedules and responding to auditor inquiries.
- Monitoring internal controls and recommending improvements to enhance financial accuracy and operational efficiency.
- Assisting with the preparation and review of IRS Form 990 and other regulatory filings.
- Collaborating with program managers on budget-to-actual reporting and providing financial analysis to support program performance.
- Supporting contract billing, invoicing, and tracking of reimbursable expenses in accordance with grant and contract terms.
