Primary Function
Under the supervision of the Substance Use Disorders (SUD) Initiatives Program Manager, the SUD Communication and Community Engagement Coordinator [CCEC] serves the MGB SUD Equity grant project priority populations in health care, public safety, and community-based settings. The CCEC fosters relationships between UCC and organizations within the Dorchester community, facilitating communication, participation, and collaboration. The CCEC builds partnerships, organizes community events, and promotes awareness about substance use and overdose prevention within the community. The CCEC also gathers feedback, analyzes community needs, and reports on SUD engagement efforts.
Duties & Responsibilities
Communication and Outreach:
Develop and implement strategies to engage the community through various channels, including events, social media, and direct communication. Conduct visits in the community to provide information on UCC’s substance use services and the importance of SUD education and awareness [not limited to providing flyers, cards other awareness tools that are accessible to community members].
Relationship Building
Establish and maintain strong relationships with community members, local organizations, and key stakeholders.
Event Planning And Coordination
Organize and manage community events and meetings to promote the organization's substance use and overdose prevention work and facilitate participation. Facilitate and/or deliver communications, presentations about UCC substance use services at community spaces including open community meetings, tabling and public forums.
Needs Assessment
Identify and analyze community needs and priorities to inform the organization's substance use and overdose prevention programs and initiatives.
Feedback Collection And Analysis
Gather feedback from the community to assess the effectiveness of SUD engagement efforts and inform future planning. Gain and share information about specific health topics most relevant to the population being served. Establish and maintain a SUD leadership team with community members that are interested in addressing SUD in their communities and meet with them on an ongoing basis. Facilitate/participate in the process of the community feedback forum selected by the grant implementation team.
Reporting And Evaluation
Track and report on SUD community engagement activities and encounters, analyzing data to measure impact and identify areas for improvement. Participate in grant-related data collection and reporting activities.
Collaboration
Work closely with other UCC departments to ensure consistent SUD and overdose prevention messaging and coordinated efforts.
Advocacy
Represent UCC and its mission to various stakeholders, including residents, community groups, and government agencies. Develop and integrate a community resource document for patient availability. Advocate for the integration of this document in all areas in the health center.
Minimum Basic Knowledge
Associates degree or Bachelor’s degree (desired) and/or minimum of 2 years of experience in a healthcare setting, field of substance use disorders, behavioral health services or community engagement coordination and outreach. Knowledge of PHI and confidentiality. Good knowledge of common computer programs and use with an EHR (electronic health record) or willingness to learn.
Experience & Qualifications
Experience or a desire to work in a community-oriented setting and with low income populations; sensitivity to socio-economic, trauma, and other factors impacting high-need communities. Exhibit an aptitude for thinking creatively in the engagement of community-based organizations. Familiarity with UCC neighborhoods and agencies is an added plus. Previous experience working in the field of substance use desirable and hold existing knowledge and/or commitment to learn more about the following subjects, within the first 3 months of employment, with the support of MGB SUD Equity project. Characteristics and examples of evidence-based treatment. Harm reduction approaches and interventions. Recovery-oriented systems of care and the landscape of such services in Boston; medicine for opioid use disorder and where patients can access MAT within Boston; and other forms of treatment (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy, contingency management). Best practices in community engagement. Ability to identify and resolve issues that may arise during community engagement activities. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with a variety of individuals and groups. Strong ability to work well in a collaborative team environment. Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines. Ability to gather, analyze, and interpret data to assess community needs and evaluate engagement efforts. Bilingual language skills in in Spanish or Cape Verdean Creole desirable.

Works independently adhering to UCC policies and procedures to assess community needs and represent UCC and its mission effectively and in a professional manner.

Authorized to access only certain limited categories of PHI and certain limited sections of the UCC patient’s medical record that are necessary to perform job duties, whether treatment, payment or operations duties.
