Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed VA physicians who met the requirements at their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens, in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved school.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Completion of residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification. Residency programs approved by ACGME, AOA, or other recognized programs deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.
  • Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited programs and meeting other basic requirements may be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and can only be appointed on an intermittent or fee basis.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to sit, stand, ambulate, bend, and lift up to 15 pounds; ability to use a telephone and computer; must complete an online onboarding process.

Duties

  • Provide psychiatric services as a member of an interdisciplinary team specializing in medication management of mental disorders.
  • Work at Richmond VA Medical Center, a 349-bed facility offering comprehensive health care services, including community-based outpatient clinics.
  • Participate in residency programs and contribute to VA's trauma and Parkinson's research centers.

  • Perform clinical duties such as obtaining patient histories, mental status exams, diagnostics, treatment plans, psychotherapy, medication management, emergency response, and telehealth services.
