California Lutheran University (Cal Lutheran) seeks an experienced, inclusive, and collaborative leader to serve as its next Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (COAS).
Located in Thousand Oaks, California, the university was founded in 1959 and is formally recognized as a Hispanic-Serving Institution since 2016. Cal Lutheran serves 2,297 undergraduate and 1,054 graduate students, with students from 67 countries and a wide range of faiths and spiritual beliefs. The university emphasizes a small-class, student-centered educational experience and a commitment to helping each student pursue their passions to discover their purpose and transform their communities and the world. Cal Lutheran is made up of six academic units that deliver a personalized classroom experience.
As the largest unit at Cal Lutheran, the College of Arts and Sciences (COAS) provides the foundational undergraduate liberal arts education. The COAS values diverse experiences, perspectives, and knowledge and aims to cultivate a learning environment that is student-centered, welcoming, and inclusive. The college encourages exploration, critical thinking, and integrity in service to the campus and broader world. The mission is to mentor students and equip them to contribute meaningfully on campus and beyond, with strong emphasis on innovative teaching and understanding of diverse perspectives.
The next Dean will lead the COAS into a new era of innovation and growth, supporting faculty achievement, elevating the college’s profile and resources, enhancing student success, and fostering collaborations across campus. The Dean will provide modern, transparent, and effective leadership for the College and serve as its chief executive and intellectual leader.
The Dean must demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and belonging, and possess superior academic credentials and a record of scholarly achievement that merits the rank of a tenured professor at Cal Lutheran. A progressive track record of administrative leadership is required. The ideal candidate will be able to lead, envision, and innovate; engage and unite constituents; listen carefully and communicate persuasively; build strong relationships and collaborate across the University; understand and support the needs of all disciplines; secure external funding; develop partnerships beyond the University; and manage the College’s administrative and budgetary functions with a high level of skill.
