DC Design Manager AMER Region, Data Center Engineering – Job ID: | Amazon Data Services, Inc. AWS is seeking a Sr. Regional Design Manager to join its design team. The role is part of a global engineering leadership team with Architects, Structural, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Security and Control Engineers. AWS self-performs engineering on most capacity delivery projects, enabling close coordination with project details to drive outcomes, influence design direction, and improve design delivery for the region. The role involves collaborating across AWS, external engineering resources, and regulatory agencies to develop data center facilities that exemplify space utilization, energy efficiency, and cost effectiveness. The team emphasizes speed to market, reliability, professional growth, and continuous learning in Amazon’s data center operations.
Responsibilities
- Lead project teams of discipline leads to deliver quality and globally consistent data center designs across the Americas within schedule and cost constraints while maintaining high quality.
- Influence internal stakeholders, operations teams, and external consultants to address program-wide design changes.
- Manage escalations from the design team and collaborate with procurement, construction, and external consultants.
- Identify disciplines impacted by design issues to drive cross-disciplinary design decisions.
- Understand design development, design change management, permitting (working with AHJs), and implementation (working with CMs/RFIs/Submittals) lifecycle.
- Apply project management skills including critical path scheduling, risk management, quality management, and cost management.
- Manage design consultants including procurement, contracting, deliverable management, and payments.
- Communicate effectively with AWS leadership and external project partners, including creating, tracking, and reporting metrics related to schedule, cost, and quality throughout the project lifecycle.
- Develop innovative solutions prior to and during construction to reduce contract change orders without impacting quality or reliability.
- Prioritize competing priorities and create robust resolution frameworks in ambiguous situations.
- Drive speed, quality, and simplification by reducing rework, automating manual work, standardizing processes, and implementing best practices across the business.
- Create global best practice documentation and facilitate knowledge sharing across the globe.
- Motivate others to achieve impeccable quality in a growth and deadline-driven environment.
- Travel for site assessments, internal design meetings, construction reviews, and interfacing with design consultants; anticipated travel not to exceed 25% (international travel may be needed).

Basic Qualifications
- 6+ years of experience managing staff, consultants, or vendors; 6+ years of design experience in commercial/industrial/other complex technical projects.
- 7+ years of large-scale Mission Critical facility design experience; 5+ years leading sub-consultants and project teams.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (MBA, Engineering, Architecture, Construction).
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineering/Architecture License.
- 3+ years of large-scale data center facility design experience.
- 10+ years of experience directly related to data center design, construction, operations, and/or facility maintenance.
- Ability to communicate complex technical issues to senior leadership or non-engineers; ability to develop business-case projections and performance metrics.
- Direct experience negotiating with regulatory agencies regarding departures from building code and construction change orders.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. Base pay ranges from $128,600/year to $212,800/year, depending on location and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company; equity, sign-on payments, and other benefits may be provided as part of the package.
