AsAmazon’s most senior individual contributors, Principal Engineers work on our hardest problems, help establish technical standards and drive the overall technical architecture, engineering practices, and engineering methodologies for products that delight our customers. This role emphasizes day-one execution and a startup mentality within a large organization.

Key responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical leader on our most demanding, cross-functional projects.
  • Functionally decompose complex problems into simple, straight-forward solutions.
  • Fully and completely understand system inter-dependencies and limitations.
  • Possess expert knowledge in performance, scalability, enterprise system architecture, and engineering best practices.
  • Assist in the career development of others, mentoring individuals and guiding team members in technical issues and career growth.
  • Exert technical influence over multiple teams, sharing deep knowledge to increase productivity and effectiveness. You are a visionary leader, builder and operator.
  • Balance technical leadership with strong business judgement to make right technology decisions.

Basic Qualifications

  • 10+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
  • Knowledge of object-oriented design, data structures, and algorithms

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep hands-on technical expertise in at least one major technical area: large scale full stack development, building complex distributed systems, designing massive global networks.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $180,100/year to $311,200/year, with final compensation based on factors including location, knowledge, skills, and experience.
