Overview We are seeking a Senior Software Development Manager to lead a team focused on developing agentic solutions for conversational AI in Amazon Shopping. In this role, you will drive the creation of AI agents that enable large-scale reinforcement learning systems and robust evaluations, and participate in customer conversations to shape innovative, customer-centric AI experiences at Amazon scale.
Responsibilities Technical Leadership: Drive technical direction and architectural decisions for complex software systems, ensuring solutions are scalable, resilient, and maintainable; establish engineering best practices, design patterns, and technical standards for the team; make sound technical decisions based on empirical data and first principles.
People Management: Hire, develop, and retain top technical talent to build a diverse and high-performing engineering team; provide mentorship and career guidance to support growth of team members; foster a culture of ownership, innovation, and technical excellence.
Product Delivery: Ensure on-time delivery of high-quality software through effective planning, risk management, and resource allocation; balance technical debt remediation with feature development to maintain long-term system health; drive operational excellence through monitoring, alerting, and continuous improvement of systems; maintain a bias for action while upholding reliability and customer experience.
Cross-Functional Leadership: Partner with product managers, scientists, UX designers, and business stakeholders to define and execute product strategy; represent the team in cross-organizational forums and strategic planning sessions; build relationships with key stakeholders across the organization to drive alignment and support.
Team Focus: Support the Amazon Shopping AI-first initiative to improve search using large-scale foundation models and enable conversational applications across partner teams.
About The Team The Amazon Shopping Team focuses on improving shopping on Amazon using the conversational capabilities of large language models. We are working on an AI-first initiative to enhance search with large-scale foundation models and to enable downstream applications across partner teams in Amazon Stores. Our goal is to build large language models that empower conversational applications and facilitate online shopping.
Basic Qualifications 3+ years of engineering team management experience
7+ years of engineering experience
Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and live-site operations
Experience partnering with product or program management teams
Experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems
Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals, data structures, and algorithms
Proficiency in at least one modern programming language (e.g., Java, C++, Python, Go)
Track record of delivering complex software projects on time and with high quality
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications Experience communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
Experience recruiting, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills and effectiveness
Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
Knowledge of AWS services and cloud architecture patterns
Experience with microservice architectures, containerization, and orchestration technologies
Background in machine learning, data engineering, or similar technically complex domains
Track record of successful cross-team collaborations and influencing without authority
Experience with continuous integration/continuous deployment practices and tools
Demonstrated ability to mentor and grow technical leaders

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company; depending on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package.
