Job Overview

The phlebotomist performs phlebotomy under the direction of a department Supervisor or designee and performs venipuncture, heel sticks, finger sticks, and bleeding times according to standard operating procedures and delivers specimens to the appropriate department.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or Equivalent
• Phlebotomy Certification

Essential Functions

• Perform phlebotomy under the direction of a department Supervisor or designee
• Perform venipuncture, heel sticks, finger sticks, and bleeding times according to standard operating procedures and deliver specimens to the appropriate department
• Respond promptly to STAT, timed test requests, and perform routine rounds on time
• Enter test requests and receive specimens in LIS computer system EPIC
• Covers Central Processing
• Greet and register laboratory outpatients, instruct outpatients on correct collection and storage of specimens, and ensure complete and correct documentation for Medicare/Medicaid patients as required by federal law and corporate compliance policies
• Obtain and verify information prior to processing test orders
• Provide proper documentation of patient identification and test results
• Perform quality control as per policy
• Read, be familiar with, participate in periodic education/training regarding, and comply with RWJBH-Corporate Compliance Program, Code of Conduct, and other corporate compliance policies
• Practice Standard Precautions, Hazard and Safety guidelines
• Participate in Health Fair screenings as needed
• Assist in orientation and training of new employees and participate in affiliated teaching programs of the hospital as assigned
• Oversee daily operations of Phlebotomy in the absence of the Phlebotomy Supervisor
• Assist the Phlebotomy Supervisor to oversee the daily operation of the Phlebotomy department
• Perform staff training on new equipment and/or procedures under the direction of the Phlebotomy Supervisor
• Maintain continued education on MediaLab
• Adhere to departmental and Laboratory policies and procedures
• Perform other duties as assigned
