Overview
STGi is seeking a Phlebotomist to provide services at our Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC). The general duty is to provide phlebotomy services as well as administrative/clerical support for the CBOC.
Responsibilities
- Perform a full range of phlebotomy duties, including venipuncture, finger-stick, and heel-stick procedures using appropriate techniques; set up and complete special test-related phlebotomy procedures and ensure proper patient accessioning, specimen collection, processing, and distribution.
- Conduct patient in-processing prior to specimen collection, including review of accompanying paperwork and providing cordial guidance and assistance to patients.
- Assemble equipment (tourniquet, needles, disposable containers, gauze, alcohol, etc.) for specified tests or procedures.
- Verify or record patient identity and communicate with patients to allay fear, conduct interviews, take vital signs, and draw/test blood samples as needed (e.g., for donor screening at a blood bank).
- Provide technical oversight and training to ensure invasive procedures are performed safely, sanitarily, and efficiently with minimal discomfort to patients (where applicable).
- Perform front desk lab administrative/clerical duties and document all samples per SOPs; maintain supply inventory and cleanliness of the front desk and phlebotomy area.
- Provide non-phlebotomy administrative/clerical support in various clinic areas as needed (front desk, exam rooms, Telehealth, etc.).
- Instruct on patient-centered specimen collection (e.g., 24-hour urine, occult blood testing, semen analysis) and communicate special requirements for laboratory-collected specimens (fasting requirements, special diets, etc.).
- Demonstrate knowledge of phlebotomy and collection of adequate clinical specimens; use age-specific techniques to obtain specimens from infants and the elderly where applicable.
- Recognize patient reactions (e.g., syncope, vomiting, unconsciousness) and know procedures to manage such instances; counsel patients on post-phlebotomy care and potential complications (e.g., hematomas).
- Support unit operations with general clerical/administrative coordination.
- Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Skills
- Prefer two (2) years of current clinical phlebotomy experience within the last three years.
- Knowledge of medical terminology for understanding and communicating test requests and results.
- Knowledge of patient reactions and appropriate procedures for adverse events (syncope, vomiting, unconsciousness).
- Excellent diplomatic communication skills and experience handling difficult customer situations.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task.
Required Education
- Certificate of completion of a phlebotomy course (required).
- Maintain current CPR/BLS certification from American Heart Association or MTN.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
- Moderate physical activity; ability to handle objects up to 25 pounds or stand/walk for extended periods.
- Work is typically performed in an interior/office environment; may require responding to medical emergencies within the clinic.
