Responsibilities

Assumes responsibility for receiving and determining acceptability of all specimens in the Department of Pathology, prepares specimens according to designated protocol for each laboratory procedure, and engages in computer activity for the Laboratory Information System and the Hospital Information System. Obtains blood and non-blood specimens from inpatients/outpatients/outreach by venipuncture from the arm and/or micro-collections from fingers or infant heel in various collection tubes, some containing preservatives or anticoagulants. Contributes to section productivity and cost effectiveness. Recognizes situations that require referral to Technical Supervisor, Manager, Laboratory Director, or Chief of Section/Chairman of Department. Works at various pre-analytical locations including inpatient, outpatient stations and outreach; maintains attention to detail during patient interactions. Outreach phlebotomists are assigned to nursing home locations. Uses two-identifier patient identification methods. understands legal requirements for drawing blood, handling specimens, and using relevant medical equipment. Applies effective venipuncture techniques and has knowledge of testing protocols and equipment. Demonstrates dexterity and strong hand-eye coordination, and communicates effectively verbally and in writing. Performs additional tasks as requested by the Chairman of Pathology or designee.

Qualifications

Required:

• High school graduate or equivalent
• Basic Life Support certification
• Valid driver license and insurance for outreach phlebotomists

Preferred:

• Completion of a recognized phlebotomy course in Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant or equivalent
• Certification with an accredited agency such as the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians, Inc., and/or the National Phlebotomy Association
• 1 year of practical phlebotomy experience
