Job Summary

Under the general supervision of a supervisor, the phlebotomist assumes the responsibility for safely performing venipunctures and related procedures in accordance with hospital and lab department policies and procedures.

Job Functions

1. Successfully performs venipuncture on patients from neonates to geriatrics.
2. Completes phlebotomy procedures in a timely manner.
3. Reviews physicians' orders prior to performing venipuncture/exam.
4. Follows hospital and departmental procedures regarding patient care, infection control, and National Patient Safety Goals (double identifier).
5. Performs sweat chloride tests.
6. Documents any orders needing clarification.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Medical assistant or phlebotomy certificate preferred
• BLS certification required
• Knowledge of needles, anticoagulants, and test preparation
• On-the-job or vocational training required
• Ability to read and write to follow instructions
• Excellent communication skills
• Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
