Overview

Centers Laboratory of New Jersey is actively searching for Phlebotomists to work weekdays, 8 AM – 7 PM, at our Newark, NJ location. The ideal candidate will have 2 years of prior experience and excellent interpersonal skills.

Reports to: Phlebotomy Supervisor. Will work in multiple locations.

Position Summary

Phlebotomists are professionals who draw blood from patients. Responsibilities include interviewing and preparing patients for blood draws, following strict safety procedures to limit exposure to infectious materials, and maintaining accurate records for proper test processing.

Record keeping and labeling are major duties to ensure tests are performed on correct specimens. The role may include specimen storage and centrifugation procedures if trained.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Identify patients accurately using wristbands, documents, or other known identification
  • Assemble supplies and equipment required for specimen collection according to standards, policies, and procedures
  • Identify priority levels (Stat, timed, routine)
  • Determine appropriate venipuncture method based on patient factors
  • Reassure patients and help them relax
  • Find suitable veins for puncture and perform blood draws using proper technique
  • Maintain safety: keep sharps and equipment out of reach and dispose of medical waste properly
  • Follow correct order of draw and use appropriate PPE
  • Ensure quality and quantity of samples for tests and tubes
  • Label tubes correctly and deliver to testing laboratories
  • Avoid drawing from a patient more than two times without requesting assistance
  • Answer patient questions and provide useful information
  • Keep accurate patient records and maintain confidentiality
  • Adhere to health and safety standards; monitor patient reactions and equipment operation
  • Educate patients on immediate aftercare
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary work space
  • Adhere to specimen storage and centrifugation procedures if trained
  • Must be capable of collecting and processing Covid-19 tests
  • Attend required company meetings and training programs

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Phlebotomy Technician certificate preferred; if not, completion of a hospital or major lab training program
  • Understanding of standard blood drawing practices and procedures
  • 2 years of proven experience as a phlebotomist
  • Good interpersonal skills and communication abilities
  • Flexibility to work nights, evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts
  • Strict adherence to safety regulations and manuals
  • Knowledge of aseptic and sterilization techniques
  • Valid state driver’s license with a good driving record
  • Adequate automobile insurance; vehicle in good condition
