Phlebotomist
Job Description
- The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.
Responsibilities

Perform blood collections by venipuncture and capillary techniques for all age groups.

Collect specimens for drug screens, paternity tests, alcohol tests, etc.

Perform data entry of patient information in an accurate and timely manner.

Process billing information and collect payments when required.

Prepare all collected specimens for testing and analysis.

Maintain patient and specimen information logs.
-
Provide superior customer service to all patients.
-
Complete administrative and clerical duties as necessary.

Travel to additional sites when needed.

Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, decontamination, updating patient information, etc.

Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.

Explain the process of venipuncture blood drawing and other specimen collection clearly and courteously.

Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.

Fully understand all physicians' orders.

Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.

Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.

Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% correctness.

Package specimens for transport.

Store specimen samples according to required temperature and place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes.

Accurately label and follow procedures outlined by specific protocols necessary for transport to maintain the integrity of the specimen.

Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.

Attend annual department trainings.

Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Essential Skills
-
Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state where you will be employed (required in some states).

Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

High School Diploma or GED.
-
0-2 years of experience.

Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

Ability to work independently or in a team environment.

Comfortable working under minimal supervision.

Reliable transportation and clean driving record if applicable.
-
Flexibility to work overtime as needed.
-
Able to pass a standardized color blindness test.

Phlebotomy certification from an accredited agency
-
Previous experience as a phlebotomist with a track record of providing exceptional customer service.
Work Environment
- This role is based in a Patient Service Center (PSC). The location is medium-sized, and the worker is expected to stand for the majority of their shift. The phlebotomist will work with a team and other employees, servicing patients from newborns to the elderly. The first week of training is orientation. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $18.00/hr.
