Phlebotomist
The primary role of a phlebotomist is to support various assigned tasks, troubleshoot, train, and offer workflow recommendations.
Responsibilities:
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate work areas.
- Update patient information and collect/store specimens according to established procedures.
- Clearly explain the venipuncture process and other specimen collection methods such as urine or fecal collection.
- Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Fully understand and adhere to physicians' orders.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
- Ensure accuracy by checking test requisitions or computer labels against scripts.
- Package specimens for transport and store samples according to required temperatures.
- Follow procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transport.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attend annual department training sessions.
- Answer telephone inquiries and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Essential Skills:
- Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment as required.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 2-4 years of experience in blood draw and venipuncture.
- Proficiency in using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations.
Additional Skills & Qualifications:
- Customer service experience.
- Experience with pediatric blood draws.
- CPT coding knowledge.
Work Environment:
This position operates in a primary care setting, serving patients of all ages. Work hours are Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm.
Job Type & Location:
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Falls Church, Virginia.
Pay and Benefits:
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $24.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
