Our laboratory plays a crucial role in patient care by providing accurate and timely diagnostic testing and analyses. We're a team of dedicated professionals who are essential partners in detecting, diagnosing, and monitoring various diseases and conditions.

How you'll contribute

A Phlebotomist - Laboratory who excels in this role:

  • Greet patients, answer phones, register and check in visits.
  • Recognize and resolve questionable orders and patient identification.
  • Perform venipuncture, capillary puncture, culture collection, and arterial blood gases according to the specimen/collection manual.
  • Responsible for the collection of most specimens used in the laboratory within the scope of their training.
  • Accurately interprets collection lists and/or requisitions for the appropriateness of sample type, volume and equipment for the indicated testing and identifies patients utilizing proper technique.
  • Trains and orients new phlebotomists/employees in the techniques of computer entry, venipuncture, capillary puncture, and throat culture collection.
  • Ensures an adequate level of section supplies based on anticipated needs, ensuring that work areas are stocked.
  • Responds to STATS and outpatient alert (buzzer) and out-reach facilities within a timely manner.
  • Performs clerical duties such as filing, retrieving, faxing and coping written reports.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge of operation of office equipment such as fax, copier, computer and various printers.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge of Universal Precautions, Infection Control Principles and Safety in every day practice.
  • Demonstrate competency in designated lab sections at prescribed intervals.
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reading technical manuals.
  • Organize and prioritize workload to avoid delays for patients, testing, and/or reporting results.
  • Ensure efficient operations by using appropriate supplies with minimal waste and using down time constructively.
  • Assists in lab ordering/maintaining inventory.
  • Evaluate, address, and/or escalate requests for add-on testing, general laboratory information, and billing inquiries as appropriate.
  • Must interact in a friendly, courteous and professional manner with coworkers, medical staff, patients and other hospital personnel on a daily basis.
  • Maintains a clean, well-kept work area.
  • Performs all duties in an independent manner with minimal direction and supervision.
  • Recognizes and performs duties which need to be performed although not directly assigned.
  • Follow established guidelines for missed collections, recollects, and difficult phlebotomies.
  • Process and prepare samples with required paperwork for reference lab testing.
  • Distribute lab result reports to the appropriate providers.

What we're looking for

Applicants should possess a high school graduate, or G.E.D. Additional requirements include:

  • Graduate from a Phlebotomy Technician Program
