General Description: Under the direct supervision of the Phlebotomy Supervisor, this position collects adequate and correct blood specimens by venipuncture and micro collection techniques to obtain maximum quality samples on both inpatients and outpatients. Properly identifies the patient and verifies appropriate preparation and obtains necessary information, uses laboratory computer terminals to enter and retrieve laboratory data. Access to Med rooms, unattended, to do their job - only (NO ACTIVITIES WITH MEDS). The position shall exemplify the desired Culture of Choice and philosophies of Parrish Healthcare.

Responsibilities

  • Provides all aspects of Phlebotomy care based on established standards.
  • Demonstrates competency in procedures within the scope of practice as appropriate to the ages of the patients served; collects adequate and correct specimens with venipuncture and micro collection techniques for Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric patients.
  • Confirms patient identification and correctly interprets physician orders and diagnoses; confirms with each outpatient the ordering physician name and tests requested.
  • Documents standing orders, explains to the patient when the order will expire, and, when taking a verbal order for a test, uses proper phone etiquette and provides written follow-up instructions.
  • Uses the computer system to edit laboratory requests/requisitions, and to add or modify tests; follows collection batch routines and uses the preview edit screen, Phlebotomy Live, and Outstanding Specimen Report to ensure all samples are collected.
  • Educates the patient before procedures and answers questions; provides verbal and written aftercare instructions.
  • Completes blood specimen processing with correct patient identification for specimen integrity and safe transportation to the main lab; performs daily point-of-care quality checks at outpatient locations (glucometer performance and temperature charts).
  • Organizes workflow to expedite testing, prioritizes activities, and documents/follows up to correct or minimize identified problems in specimen collection; meets established turnaround times for stat and routine collections.
  • Adheres to hospital and department policies and procedures; maintains confidentiality and commitment to the Corporate Compliance Program.
  • Serves as a preceptor to students and new employees; collaborates with other departments to teach and learn new procedures; follows fire, disaster, and safety regulations relevant to the work area.
  • Performs similar or related duties as assigned, such as ordering lab supplies or participating in special data collection projects.

Requirements

  • Formal Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Work Experience: 1 to 2 years of phlebotomy experience preferred; may consider candidates who completed a phlebotomy training program.
  • Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations: BLS through The American Heart Association required; phlebotomy certification strongly preferred.
  • Valid State of Florida Driver’s License (FDL) and MVR: acceptable to PMC’s corporate automobile insurance carrier; license will be screened prior to employment and annually thereafter.
