Department Overview
The purpose of this position is to provide services as a licensed pharmacist, ensuring the safe and proper distribution and use of drugs for inpatients and outpatients. Patients range from neonates, infants less than one year old, children and adolescents (ages 10-18), adults (ages 19-65), to the elderly (over 65). The role involves higher-level decision-making regarding drug therapy, making recommendations during prescribing, and sometimes making independent decisions about drug therapy in collaboration with other healthcare team members. This position operates within a flexible model where centralized functions, such as order entry and verification, are integrated into decentralized practice as patient care technology evolves.
Function/Duties of Position
Identify, resolve, and document complex therapeutic problems, demonstrating advanced knowledge and application to specific patient populations.
Respond accurately to drug information requests from physicians, nurses, patients, and families; review and interpret literature independently and apply findings to patient care.
Interpret and evaluate physician orders and prescriptions for accuracy and appropriateness. Verify medications prepared and dispensed from the pharmacy. Supervise pharmacy technicians' activities in your work areas.
Monitor therapeutic responses and adverse effects, consulting with providers as needed. Report adverse drug reactions, drug defects, and medication errors appropriately.
Influence therapy standards by establishing peer relationships with medical staff; recognized as a drug authority in specialized areas by physicians, nurses, and pharmacists.
Participate in educational programs within and between departments; contribute to peer development.
Required Qualifications
Current Pharmacist’s license issued by the Oregon State Board of Pharmacy.
Training or experience in a specialized area may be required at recruitment.
- BS in Pharmacy or Pharm.D. plus Practice Residency or Specialist Certification (e.g., BCPS, BCOPS).
Job-Related Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Principles of pharmaceutical care, age-related and disease-related modifications of drug therapy.
- Contemporary medication use systems.
- Interpersonal and communication skills, including presentations.
- Project management and systematic problem-solving skills.
- Computer skills, including EMR, word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
Preferred Qualifications
- PGY-2 Specialty Residency, BLS/ACLS certification, vaccination certification.
- Experience in inpatient hospital pharmacy practice.
- Additional specialist certifications (e.g., BCPS, BCOPS).
Additional Details
The pharmacist will manage competing demands from healthcare professionals, influence clinical decision-making, policies, and workflows. Daily work may involve intense situations, frequent interruptions, and external factors that can cause mental fatigue or stress.
