Coordinate daily workflow, scheduling, and training of assigned staff and review work to ensure completeness and consistency. Responsible for blood and blood culture collection; non-blood specimen collection including urine, sputum, semen samples, throat swabs; chain of custody specimen collection. Perform venipunctures and skin punctures competently and expediently.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate daily workflow, scheduling, and training of assigned staff; review work to ensure completeness and consistency.
- Responsible for blood and blood culture collection; non-blood specimens including urine, sputum, semen samples, throat swabs; chain of custody specimen collection.
- Perform venipunctures and skin punctures competently and expediently.
- Oversee the phlebotomy department operations in the absence of the Supervisor/Manager.
- Assist with monthly scheduling of phlebotomy staff and coverage for vacations and call-offs.
- Monitor supply levels and initiate requisitions as needed to maintain adequate inventory.
- Assist with customer complaints and investigations related to specimen collection.
- Assist with orientation and training of new Phlebotomy Techs and annual competencies/evaluations.
- Provide support for departmental productivity reports and work queues.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education, Certification, and/or Licensure: High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Experience: Two (2) years of phlebotomy experience.
- Preferred Qualifications: Phlebotomy Certification (CPT); One (1) year of phlebotomy lead experience.
Physical Requirements
- Heavy/Hard work: lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying materials and equipment weighing 40+ lbs.
- Ability to bend, stoop, reach and be capable of normal rotation, standing and walking for entire shift.
Working Environment
- May require unsupervised access to restricted areas containing medications, supplies, and patient confidential information.
- May be required to travel between facilities/buildings.
- May be scheduled to work various shifts based on departmental needs.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to use a computer keyboard, monitor, mouse, and calculator.
- Ability to use computer software (PowerPoint, Word, Excel).
- Ability to use fax machines, printers and other office equipment.
