Core duties and responsibilities
- Supervises the operation of the phlebotomy team by supervising personnel and overseeing day-to-day workflow.
- Assists with selecting and hiring employees. Completes departmental training and orientation and assigns departmental staff. Supervises and evaluates the effectiveness of employees on an ongoing basis.
- Schedules and adjusts staff to meet facility needs considering staff competency, established standards and regulatory requirements, including appropriate supervision, and wage and hour law.
- Supervises the daily duties and outcomes of the phlebotomy staff.
- Ensures phlebotomy duties are completed in a time-efficient manner, prioritizes STAT orders, ASAP orders, scheduled orders and outpatients. Prints, documents, and reviews pending Specimen Collection lists periodically throughout each workday.
- Provides input in the evaluation of the staff for promotions, salary adjustments, annual performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, and termination based on documented performance within time frames established by the institution.
- Identifies and addresses outreach quality issues observing for trends and resolving issues with appropriate documentation.
- Ensures that the staff is properly trained for specimen type, proper receipt into the LIS, troubleshooting of missing samples and orders.
- May coordinate health fairs, employee screens, and low-cost blood screens offered by the hospital or the lab.
- Performs the duties of a Phlebotomist as needed.
Minimum qualifications
- Education, Certification, and/or Licensure: High school graduate or equivalent.
- Experience: Three (3) years phlebotomy experience.
Preferred qualifications
- Education, Certification, and/or Licensure: Associate degree in healthcare related field. Phlebotomy Certification.
- Experience: Four (4) years phlebotomy experience.
Physical requirements
- Heavy/Hard work: Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying of materials and equipment weighing 40+lbs.
- Ability to bend, stoop, reach and be capable of normal rotation, standing and walking for entire shift.
Working environment
- May require unsupervised access to restricted areas that may contain medications, supplies and patient confidential information.
- May be required to travel between facilities/buildings.
- May be scheduled to work various shifts based on departmental needs.
Skills and abilities
- Ability to use a computer keyboard, monitor, mouse, and calculator.
- Ability to use computer software (PowerPoint, Word, and Excel).
- Ability to use fax machines, printers and other office equipment.
