Job Overview
Determines the suitability of whole blood and apheresis blood component donors and patients according to established standards. Collects blood components and therapeutic products from suitable donors and patients using automated and non-automated procedures. Possesses knowledge of blood collection theory and practice in order to diagnose, educate and treat donor, patient, and staff responses to actual or potential problems.
Qualifications
Required:
- Registered nurse with New Jersey licensure.
- Phlebotomy or IV certification.
- Current CPR certification.
- Advanced nursing degree or the equivalent experience required.
- Minimum 10 years R.N. licensure.
- Minimum 3 years Supervisory management experience required.
- Apheresis and/or automated medical instrumentation expertise.
Preferred:
- Management, QA and patient/ donor experience preferred
- Background in whole blood separation techniques helpful.

Essential Functions
- Reception and Donor Information: Greets donors and patients in reception and/or donation area in a pleasant and helpful manner.
- Determines and assists in completion of functions such as verification of donation times, scheduling of necessary appointments, and assuring completeness and accuracy of patient paperwork.
- Maintains donor privacy and confidentiality of donor information. Registers donors in BCIS and eDonor when a receptionist is not on duty. May lecture to Medical Technology interns or resident staff.
- Monitors quality control procedures on analytical tests, equipment, reagents, etc.; evaluates results and implements corrective action when indicated.
- Operates, calibrates, conducts performance checks and maintains clinical laboratory instruments in section.
- Performs all other appropriate tasks as required in area of responsibility and assignment.
- Performs routine and special diagnostic procedures on all body fluids to provide information for diagnosing or combating infectious disease under supervision.
- Provides clinical orientation and supervision for students and new or less skilled personnel.
- Corrects basic instrument malfunctions; refers serious malfunctions to supervisor.
- Alerts nurse's station, doctor’s office, etc., of all abnormal or life-threatening values.
- Donor Screening: Determines suitability of whole blood and blood component donors and patients by screening history and physicals; performs confidential interviews.
- Records results of medical history and physical; reviews donor information to insure complete and accurate records.
- Monitors donor for signs affecting suitability or donation outcome; consults with physician as needed.
- Works with physicians to schedule and perform therapeutic procedures; ensures safe and quality treatment and timely documentation.
- Identifies emergent situations, initiates interventions and documents outcomes.
- Provides scheduled weekend and holiday call for therapeutic procedures as required.
- Documents all procedures and data in patient charts and apheresis run sheets in a timely manner.
- Collects blood and blood components using automated and non-automated procedures; minimizes donor discomfort and incomplete procedures.
- Adheres to FDA, NJDOH, AABB, FACT and Blood Services guidelines to insure donor safety and product acceptability; assigns unique donation numbers and conducts testing.
- Delivers professional and reassuring donor experience; provides nursing observation and post-procedural care and releases donors/patients when in satisfactory condition.
- Documents all procedures and data on donation forms and run sheets.
