Job Title: Phlebotomy Technician (Apheresis, Laboratory, and Donor Center Support)

Location 1: Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, MD 20889 – 19 Positions

Location 2: Malcolm Grow Medical Clinics and Surgery Center 1050 W Perimeter Road Joint Base Andrews, MD 20762– 2 Positions

Start Date: 01 October 2025

Work Schedule: Services may be required for 24/7 operations including day, evening, night, weekend, holiday, and on-call shifts, depending on site-specific needs.

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED.

Experience

  • Minimum of one (1) year of full-time experience in phlebotomy or blood collection within the last two (2) years.
  • For Apheresis/Donor Center roles: Prior experience in donor blood collection procedures and familiarity with automated apheresis systems (e.g., Trima Accel) is preferred.

Licensure/Certification

  • Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Health career Association (NHA), or National Phlebotomy Association (NPA) is required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection using appropriate techniques.
  • Label, process, and transport blood specimens in accordance with regulatory and facility standards.
  • Verify patient identity and ensure proper patient preparation prior to specimen collection.
  • Accurately input specimen and patient data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Maintain strict adherence to infection control, safety, and quality assurance procedures.
  • Support blood donor collection and apheresis procedures (if assigned to Donor Center).
  • Prepare phlebotomy trays, stock supplies, and maintain cleanliness of phlebotomy areas.
  • Assist with specimen processing, centrifugation, and packaging for reference laboratory shipping.
  • Communicate with healthcare staff to resolve specimen collection issues and improve patient outcomes.
