Phlebotomy Lab Assistant - Full-time - Days

Pay range: $16.79/hr - $24.37/hr

Under direct supervision, the Phlebotomy Lab Assistant provides phlebotomy/accessioning service, utilizes appropriate equipment to collect, receive, accession, process pathology and laboratory specimens, and provide laboratory information and reports to customers. Assists in the training and monitoring of co-workers, students, and other hospital staff.

• Education: High School
• Licensures/Certifications: Not Applicable
• Experience: 6 months of related phlebotomy experience / 6 months related Laboratory accessioning experience
• Skills: Knowledge of medical terminology; knowledge of phlebotomy techniques and practices; oral and written communication; customer service techniques; basic arithmetic; computer and productivity applications; ability to type; ability to reduce anxiety in patients during patient care

Responsibilities

• Extracts blood from patients and performs all phlebotomy procedures, including children and infants, according to established aseptic venipuncture technique.
• Maintains detailed documentation for all phlebotomy rounds and for outpatients called back to include Physicians office.
• Enters accurate and complete patient demographic information, laboratory test orders, and verifies collection/receipt of specimens with completeness and accuracy.
• Prepares and processes specimens for testing in the clinical laboratory, including labeling, measuring, aliquoting, centrifuging, and distributing specimens to the appropriate work areas.
• Performs quality EKGs and completes all required demographic information.
• Screens and interviews Autologous and Therapeutic Donors according to protocol; completes donor room QC daily; follows universal precautions in the donor room.
• Completes donor documentation accurately and at the time of donation.
• Performs associated duties such as centrifuge maintenance, label maintenance, surface disinfection, filing, boxing requisitions, stocking and maintaining supplies.
• Checks outpatient orders for accuracy and matches requisition to Meditech orders and labels.
• Ensures all STATs are responded to in a timely manner.
• RegistersQuest and Sheppard Pratt accurately.
• Participates in the Laboratory’s continuing education program and shares knowledge gained from seminars and workshops.
• Ensures patient safety by following patient identification procedures, always using 2 patient identifiers, and double-checking all specimens against orders entered in Meditech.
• Packages and transports all specimens according to policy and procedures; ensures timely submission to the lab.

Pay Range

$16.79 - $24.37

Final salary offer will be based on the candidate's qualifications, education, experience and alignment with organizational needs.
