Position Overview: Collects blood specimens, receives, handles and processes specimens for Laboratory testing. Interacts with patients of diverse ages, backgrounds, values, beliefs and behavior. Receives, sorts and accession specimens, assigning to appropriate pre-analytic and analytic workflow. Completes computerized tasks related to patient registration and/or test order entry, specimen collection, receiving and processing. Performs basic post-analytic tasks, including distributing reports, storing and/or retrieving specimens. Completes quality-related tasks such as documentation of work, maintaining a clean, stocked and safe work area, and monitoring pending work, as well as escalating priority work. Operates and/or uses basic pre-analytic lab equipment. Adheres to all local/state/federal regulations, codes, policies and procedures to ensure privacy and safety while delivering optimal patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Collect blood specimens and manage specimen handling and processing for laboratory testing.
  • Receive, sort, and accession specimens; assign to appropriate pre-analytic and analytic workflow.
  • Complete computerized tasks related to patient registration, test order entry, specimen collection, receiving, and processing.
  • Perform basic post-analytic tasks, including distributing reports and storing/retrieving specimens.
  • Execute quality-related tasks: document work, maintain a clean, stocked, and safe work area, monitor pending work, and escalate priority items.
  • Operate and/or use basic pre-analytic laboratory equipment.
  • Adhere to local/state/federal regulations, codes, policies and procedures to ensure privacy and safety while delivering patient care.

Education & Certification

  • Education: HS Diploma or GED
  • Certification & Licensure:
    • CPT I – Certified Phlebotomy Technician I
    • OR CPT II – Certified Phlebotomy Technician II

Experience & Skills

  • Typical Experience: 1-year recent relevant experience.
  • Skills & Knowledge:
    • Knowledge of ordering laboratory testing, collecting blood specimens, handling and processing biological specimens.
    • Ability to interact compassionately and effectively with patients.
    • Ability to perform duties accurately, precisely, and reliably; organize and prioritize tasks.
    • Ability to work with patients of diverse ages, backgrounds, values, beliefs and behaviors.
    • Workflow management: respond to volume fluctuations, equipment or IS failures, shift hand-offs, STAT orders, specimen integrity issues, and pending logs.
    • Adherence to practices & procedures: follow standard practices, and applicable regulations to ensure privacy and safety.
    • Applied knowledge, critical thinking & problem solving: decision-making, recognizing deviations, escalation when needed, effective verbal and written communication, and collaborative teamwork.

Pay Range is $33.53 to $41.91 / hour. The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location. This range has not been adjusted for any specific geographic differential applicable by area where the position may be filled. Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Base pay is just one piece of the total rewards program offered by Sutter Health. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
