Overview

Inpatient Phlebotomy - PRN, Early Morning Weekend Availability role at Duke Department of Population Health Sciences

Location: Durham, NC, US 27710. Regular position in Duke Health Clinical Laboratories. This role requires in-person phlebotomy services with alternate weekend (Saturday and Sunday) and early morning availability.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of routine and specialized procedures.
  • Prepare and initiate tests and procedures including cytogenetics, general laboratory work, Point-of-Care Testing, urinalysis, phlebotomy, and specimen management.
  • Obtain total volume, perform aliquot, and distribute urine specimens as required; properly determine urine volume and label aliquot containers.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, family, and medical staff; obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay fears, and elicit cooperation.
  • Use standard equipment to maintain positive patient identification, register/accession patients and specimens, and perform order entry as required.
  • Perform quality control, safety, and infection control procedures to maintain regulatory compliance.
  • Receive and process specimens according to laboratory area procedures; prepare specimens for transport and analysis.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies, stock carts, and handle basic lab housekeeping tasks.
  • Utilize hospital information systems and software; assist with maintenance of specimens and slides; perform routine maintenance as required.
  • Assist with word processing, office tasks, and maintaining office records; perform other related duties as needed.

Education

High School diploma or GED. For assignment to phlebotomy, completion of a structured phlebotomy training course and clinical rotation are recommended.

Experience

Clinical Technician I – one year of previous clinical lab experience preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Clinical Technician II – at least 2 years’ experience as Clinical Tech I or certification as a Phlebotomist plus required competencies.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

  • Clinical Technician I: Certification as a Phlebotomist by a nationally recognized agency/board recommended. Basic Life Support preferred.
  • Clinical Technician II: Certification as a Phlebotomist may be required for assignment; Pediatric Phlebotomy experience preferred. Recognized national certifications listed include: NHA, ASCP PBT, IAPS, NPA, ASPT, NPCE, NPS, AMT, and others as approved by Clinical Labs leadership.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Basic phlebotomy and specimen processing techniques.
  • Knowledge of medical terms (preferred).
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Effective communication skills for interacting with patients and staff.
