Overview
Collects blood specimens, as well as receives, handles and processes specimens for Laboratory testing. Interacts with patients of diverse ages, backgrounds, values, beliefs and behavior. Receives, sorts and accessions specimens, assigning to appropriate pre-analytic and analytic workflow. Completes computerized tasks related to patient registration and/or test order entry, specimen collection, receiving and processing. Performs basic post-analytic tasks, including distributing reports, storing and/or retrieving specimens. Completes quality-related tasks such as documentation of work, maintaining a clean, stocked and safe work area, and monitoring pending work, as well as escalating priority work. Operates and/or uses basic pre-analytic lab equipment. Adheres to all local/state/federal regulations, codes, policies and procedures to ensure privacy and safety while delivering optimal patient care.
Responsibilities
- Collect and process specimens for laboratory testing; receive, sort and accessions specimens.
- Perform patient registration and test order entry tasks; handle specimen receiving and processing.
- Distribute reports, store and retrieve specimens; maintain accurate documentation and a clean, safe work area.
- Monitor pending work and escalate priority items as needed; operate basic pre-analytic laboratory equipment.
- Adhere to applicable regulations, codes, policies and procedures to ensure privacy and safety.
Qualifications
Education: HS Diploma or GED
Certification & Licensure: CA Licensed Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) I or II
Typical Experience: 1-year recent relevant experience
Skills and Knowledge:
- Knowledge of ordering laboratory testing, collecting blood specimens, interacting with patients, and handling and processing biological specimens.
- Ability to organize and prioritize tasks; accurate and reliable performance of duties.
- Effective communication and ability to work with patients of diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to respond to workflow fluctuations, equipment or system issues, and shift hand-offs; manage STAT orders and specimen integrity issues.
- Adherence to standard practices and procedures; knowledge of local/state/federal regulations and privacy/safety requirements.
- Critical thinking, problem solving, and collaborative communication skills.

Pay Range: $26.03 to $32.53 / hour
Note: The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location. This range has not been adjusted for geographic differentials. Compensation considers experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Base pay is part of the total rewards program; eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
