Position Overview:
The Heavy Equipment Operator plays a crucial role in the successful completion of industrial construction projects by operating and maintaining a variety of heavy machinery, including bulldozers, cranes, excavators, and loaders. This position ensures the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment to support the excavation, grading, and construction phases of projects. The Heavy Equipment Operator will work closely with project managers and construction teams to ensure that machinery is operated in line with safety protocols, timelines, and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Operation of Heavy Equipment: Safely and efficiently operate a variety of heavy machinery, including bulldozers, cranes, excavators, and backhoes, to perform tasks such as grading, excavation, lifting, and material handling.
Site Preparation: Prepare and maintain job sites by clearing and leveling land, moving materials, and assisting with construction and excavation needs as required.
Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety regulations and best practices to ensure a safe working environment for yourself and others on site. This includes conducting pre-operation equipment inspections and maintaining equipment according to manufacturer guidelines.
Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment to ensure optimal performance and prevent breakdowns. Report any major issues to the equipment supervisor for further action.
Collaboration with Construction Teams: Work closely with site supervisors, project managers, and other team members to coordinate the use of heavy equipment in alignment with project schedules and specifications.
Material Handling & Transportation: Assist in the transportation of materials, including the loading and unloading of equipment, tools, and other construction materials to ensure project progress.
Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate records of equipment usage, inspections, and maintenance, as well as report on any operational issues or safety concerns.
Required Qualifications:
Education & Certification: High school diploma or equivalent; certification in heavy equipment operation or completion of an apprenticeship program preferred.
Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience operating heavy machinery in an industrial or construction setting.
Skills:
Proven experience with a variety of heavy equipment, including bulldozers, cranes, excavators, and loaders.
Strong understanding of construction site operations and heavy equipment functions.
Ability to conduct equipment inspections, basic maintenance, and troubleshoot mechanical issues.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills to collaborate effectively on construction sites.
Strong focus on safety protocols and maintaining a safe work environment.
Ability to work in physically demanding and dynamic environments, including outdoor conditions.
Preferred Experience:
Experience working on large-scale industrial construction projects, such as those in the oil and gas, petrochemical, or renewable energy sectors.
OSHA 30-Hour Certification or other industry-recognized safety certifications.
Experience with GPS-controlled or automated equipment is a plus.
Experience with rigging or assisting with the setup and operation of cranes and other heavy lifting equipment.
Work Environment:
The Heavy Equipment Operator will primarily work on construction sites, where the environment may include exposure to varying weather conditions, dust, noise, and other typical hazards. The position requires the ability to operate heavy machinery for extended periods, and physical stamina is required for tasks such as loading and unloading equipment and materials. Travel to different job sites may be required based on project needs.
Reporting Structure:
The Heavy Equipment Operator reports to the Equipment Manager or Site Supervisor. Regular coordination with other members of the construction team and project managers is necessary to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.
Salary Range: $28.00 - $38.00 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.
