Position is responsible for operation of Heavy Landfill Equipment in maintenance, repair, and construction of the Landfill.
This position has been classified as a safety sensitive position and is subject to our drug testing policy to include pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident testing for prohibited substances such as marijuana, amphetamines, opioids, PCP, cocaine, and any drugs not approved for medical use by the U.S. DEA or FDA.
Responsibilities include:
- Operate all heavy equipment on a daily basis.
- Service, clean, and make minor repairs to equipment according to manufacturer specifications and procedures.
- Maintain records of preventive maintenance, service performed, and daily operations.
- Train new operators in safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment.
- Perform duties of lower-level operators as required.
- Direct customers to dumping area and monitor citizen use.
- Work nights, weekends, and holidays if necessary.
- Follow procedures regarding hazardous waste management at the landfill.
- Perform other duties as required for landfill operations.
Minimum qualifications include:
- No specific educational requirements.
- At least three years of experience in heavy equipment operation and maintenance.
Licenses and certificates required or preferred:
- Valid New Mexico Commercial Driver's License with endorsements or ability to obtain within 6 months.
- Landfill Operator Certificate (preferred or obtainable within 6 months).
- HAZWHOPER Certification (preferred).
Knowledge, skills, and abilities include:
- Understanding of department rules, regulations, and contingency plans.
Skills in:
- Safe operation of graders, loaders, dozers, packers, compactors, water wagons, computers, and printers.
Ability to:
- Operate with minimal supervision, follow safety rules, interact diplomatically with the public, and establish cooperative relationships.
Physical requirements involve:
- Moderately heavy work with frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, squatting, and lifting up to 100 pounds.
Working conditions include outdoor work in all weather, exposure to chemicals and extreme temperatures, and the necessity of using safety equipment.
