Job Description
Position Summary: The Heavy Equipment Operator is an entry-level position involved in the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical transmission systems. The role requires working at various locations and may include travel to other states based on customer demands.
Essential Functions
- Perform construction, maintenance, or repair work on energized and de-energized overhead lines safely.
- String overhead wire, set poles and anchors.
- Assist with installing transformers, lightning arrestors, cutouts, crossarms, insulators, switches, and switchgear.
- Help replace fuses in transformers and clear faulted circuits and systems.
- Work with energized high voltage systems, requiring safety and skill.
- Maintain company vehicles, equipment, and tools.
- Perform physical labor as required.
- Use company radio properly.
- Operate heavy equipment and understand basic rigging, hand lines, and knot tying.
- Follow directions and learn about materials used in line work.
- Identify primary and secondary voltages and understand induced voltage.
- Assist with transformer hookup, perform basic bucket rescue, and understand equipment grounding.
- Work at heights and in confined spaces, observing safety protocols.
- Inspect rubber goods and PPE, and use PPE appropriately.
- Install and remove services, make up and use hand lines, and understand the use of Kellum grips.
- Work outdoors in various weather conditions and be willing to glove/high voltage transmission lines.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements
- 1-2 years of experience.
- Effective communication in English.
- Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days (preferred to have a CDL).
- Willing to travel long distances and work in various locations.
- Lift over 50 lbs.
- Inspect rubber goods and PPE properly.
- Willing to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Physical Demands
Requires talking, hearing, standing, walking, handling, reaching, and physical labor.
Work Environment
Exposure to fumes, mechanical parts, vibration, extreme conditions, and loud noise. Work is performed outdoors.
