Job Summary:

The Heavy Equipment Operator – Prep Crew will be responsible for preparing the site for paving operations, ensuring that all necessary groundwork is completed to facilitate a smooth and efficient paving process. This individual will be operating and maintaining heavy equipment such as skid steers, mini excavators, graders, and dozers to clear, grade, and level the site. This position will assist in excavating and removing debris, ensuring proper drainage, and preparing subgrade material to meet project specifications. Union membership is required for this position.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

• Operate a variety of heavy construction equipment, including but not limited to mini excavators, dozers, grader trucks, and skid steers.
• Prepare the construction site by removing obstacles and ensuring the area is clear for further operations.
• Execute tasks in strict accordance with project specifications to meet quality standards.
• Perform precise and accurate work to ensure optimal project outcomes.
• Conduct routine maintenance and inspections of equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
• Maintain clear and effective communication with supervisors and colleagues to ensure coordinated efforts.
• Must possess and maintain a valid State of Ohio Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
• In-person attendance is required.

Other Required Duties and Responsibilities:

• Perform other duties as necessary or as assigned.
• Immediately report any safety hazards, accidents, or mechanical issues to the appropriate personnel.
• Provide support to other team members, including laborers, flaggers, and other skilled workers.
• Prolonged periods of sitting and standing.
• Ability to work outside of normal business hours.
• Ability to work long hours in challenging physical conditions.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

Skills/Abilities:

• Ability to adapt to changing tasks and responsibilities based on project needs.
• Basic knowledge of construction tools and equipment is required.
• Represent The Gerken Companies to customers in a professional manner, supporting the company’s goals.
• Ability to work as part of a team and take direction from supervisors while ensuring efficient workflow.

Education and Experience:

Education equivalent to graduation from an accredited high school is required.
