Under direct supervision, operates various street construction equipment and tools to construct, repair, and maintain the Town’s streets, bridges, medians, right of ways, gutters, curbs, sidewalks, alleys, drainage systems, and other public areas within the Town.

Responsibilities

  1. Performs routine and strenuous physical tasks such as hand working asphalt and concrete, loading/unloading trucks, laying pipelines, repairing manholes, patching potholes, overlaying streets, sealing cracks, and removing/replacing concrete.
  2. Operates, repairs, and maintains vehicles and heavy equipment including tractors, loaders, trenchers, bucket trucks, augers, pothole patchers, rollers, dump trucks, and motor graders.
  3. Oversees daily activities of crew members and work order completion in the absence of the crew leader.
  4. Works safely near high-speed traffic, medians, and right-of-ways.
  5. Identifies hazards and reports potential issues and work status to supervisor.
  6. Conducts daily inspections and preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  7. Assists other departments and performs additional duties as needed.
  8. Follows safety and departmental regulations and adheres to standby schedules for emergency repairs.
  9. Trains employees in equipment operation, repair, and safety techniques.
  10. Loads and unloads supplies, equipment, and tools.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Valid Texas Class “C” Driver’s License required; ability to obtain Class “A” CDL within six months.
  • One or more years of street maintenance or construction experience, including heavy equipment operation.
  • Pass a drug test and background check.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of concrete and asphalt installation and street maintenance materials.
  • Skill in operating construction equipment and tools safely.
  • Good judgment, decision-making, multitasking, and stress management skills.
  • Ability to work extensive hours and respond to emergency calls within 30 minutes.
  • Maintain positive relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to talk, read, see, walk, hear, and follow instructions.
  • Good hand/foot/eye coordination for equipment operation.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical activities, including lifting up to 100 lbs., shoveling, crawling, bending, kneeling, and climbing.
  • Work in various environments, including indoors, outdoors, confined spaces, and adverse weather conditions.
