About the Department - The Public Works Department is comprised of eight divisions under the direction of the Public Works Director and Assistant Director. Purpose of the position: operating and supervising a variety of heavy equipment in support of the York County Public Works divisions and services; maintaining and performing minor repairs on equipment and machinery; and performing related work as required. The scope includes assisting in supervising and performing road construction and maintenance tasks using heavy equipment, including grading and paving roads and parking lots, scraping roads, constructing and repairing bridges, constructing barricades, patching roads, installing asphalt, placing stone, landscaping, among others. Asphalt experience is a plus.
Work Schedule - 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Thursday. May be required to work occasional overtime to meet productivity demands.
Projected Salary Range/Pay Grade 113 - $22.49 - $26.99 per hour. Salary determined based on qualifications.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate, assign and review work; establish work schedules; monitor progress; inspect completed work; provide guidance as needed.
- Assist in supervising and performing maintenance tasks using vehicles, heavy equipment and machinery, including grading and paving roads and parking lots, scraping roads, constructing and repairing bridges, constructing barricades, mowing rights-of-way, installing asphalt or concrete, placing stone, landscaping, and related tasks.
- Assist in supervising and operating a variety of equipment and vehicles; ensure safety and proper maintenance of tools; communicate via two-way radio.
- Operate heavy vehicles to load, haul or move materials; drive county vehicles as required to perform tasks.
- Perform preventive maintenance, cleaning and minor repairs of equipment; inspect equipment for safe operating condition.
- Set up road construction sites to control traffic flow per DOT guidelines; may serve as traffic control flag person.
- Respond to after-hours emergency calls as required; on-call duties in inclement weather or holidays as necessary.
- Comply with division policies, procedures and safety standards; prepare and submit daily and monthly work reports.
- Attend trainings and workshops to enhance knowledge and skills.
- Manage inventory, property, or loss control; responsible for tools and equipment used by employees.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Requirements
- High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
- Five (5) years of experience as a heavy equipment operator or related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Special Certifications and Licenses
- Must possess and maintain a valid state Class A Commercial Driver’s License with an acceptable driving history.
- Must possess CPR / First Aid; OSHA Training (Competent Person, Confined Space, and Excavation and Trenching) or the ability to obtain.

Physical Demands
- Heavy work requiring constant lifting, shoveling, and carrying 35 to 50 pounds; occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds.
