Overview

The Vehicle Systems Division (VSD) sits at the center of the ideas and data behind current and future systems supplying innovative research and development; technical evaluations during the acquisition process; conceptual and detailed design; assembly, integration, and test; and operational support. VSD provides national expertise in vehicle engineering, guidance, navigation, and controls; robotics; electro-mechanical devices; embedded systems; fluid mechanics; propulsion; thermal control; mechanisms; structures; structural dynamics; and dynamic environments. VSD partners closely with the Human Exploration and Space Flight (HESF) Division in support of NASA. We are looking for an Avionics Hardware Systems Engineer to support the development of the Gateway lunar space station and to work with NASA Johnson Space Center and Safety & Mission Assurance (S&MA) on avionic system hazards, fault tolerance, and hazard mitigation for C&DH hardware and vehicle networks on Artemis missions. The selected candidate will document system-level avionic architecture, Con-Ops, and interfaces of the Time Triggered Ethernet (TTE) Network for the Gateway vehicle and will work on-site at NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, TX.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Develop and review Hazard Reports and Controls, FMEA, and FDIR products with S&MA Avionics Lead
• Lead development of Gateway Avionic System documentation: System Architecture, Con-Ops, Interfaces, and other required items
• Perform or oversee integrated analysis and testing of the Gateway Avionics systems, hardware, and software in relation to other Gateway systems, operational environment, and required operational capabilities
• Review and assess Gateway requirements and Verification & Validation (V&V) plan for Avionics System impacts, including integrated testing and analysis
• Communicate Gateway Avionics subsystem architectures and assess impacts of changes to Gateway requirements, V&V, testing, designs, and program decisions
• Identify, communicate, track, and mitigate Gateway Avionics System risks
• Lead and oversee trade studies to inform decision-making
• Maintain productive working relationships with cross-program technical teams
• Present to appropriate boards, panels, or technical/status meetings as needed

What You Need To Be Successful

Minimum Requirements for Project Engineer - Systems Engineer:

• Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline
• 6+ years of experience with avionics hardware systems, including design and testing tools
• Expertise in avionic system safety, Computer-Base Control Systems (CBCS), FMEA, and fault tolerance analysis
• Familiarity with avionics hardware testing, integration, and environmental testing protocols
• Working knowledge of NASA standard practices and requirements
• Experience with NASA flight operations and procedures
• Proven expertise in managing multiple concurrent tasks and excellent problem-solving skills
• Ability to work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
• Exceptional interpersonal, presentation, and communications skills, including development of and briefing of decision packages and complex information in a succinct and polished manner
• Willing to travel domestically as needed

In addition to the requirements above, the minimum requirements for Senior Project Engineer - Systems Engineer include:

• 10+ years of experience in avionics hardware systems
• Experience developing and briefing decision packages and complex information in a succinct and polished manner

How You Can Stand Out

• Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in Aerospace Engineering or closely related field desired
• Knowledge of complex TTE Avionic Systems Integration and Test & Verification (T&V)
• Expertise in building on NASA Human Spaceflight topics and safety matters
• Experience with spacecraft C&DH and/or network systems in both a testing and operational scenario
