The HR Generalist will play a key role in supporting the full spectrum of human resources functions, including recruitment, employee relations, performance management, compliance, and organizational development. This position requires a collaborative, solutions-oriented, principled HR practitioner with a strong commitment to social justice and a deep understanding of HR best practices in nonprofit or advocacy settings.
Responsibilities
Recruitment & Onboarding
- Manage end-to-end recruitment processes, ensuring equitable and inclusive hiring practices.
- Recruits, interviews, and facilitates the hiring of qualified job applicants for open positions; collaborates with departmental managers to understand skills and competencies required for openings.
- Conducts or acquires employee eligibility verifications.
- Coordinate onboarding; Implements new hire orientation and employee recognition programs to foster a welcoming and informed employee experience.
- Assist in developing and implementing initiatives that support staff engagement, retention, and growth.
- Contribute to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) efforts across the organization.
- Support the implementation of performance review systems and professional development plans.
- Provide guidance to managers on performance-related issues.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, as well as collective bargaining agreement.
- Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance.
- Reviews, tracks, and documents compliance with required and elected training, including safety and security training, anti-harassment training, professional licensure/certifications
- Maintain and update HR policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with organizational values and legal standards.
- Administer benefits, leave programs, and HRIS systems.
- Generate reports of HR data/analytics.
- Maintain accurate and confidential employee records.
- Performs routine tasks required to administer and execute human resource programs including but not limited to compensation, benefits, and leave; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety; and training and development.
- Handles employment-related inquiries from applicants, employees, and supervisors, referring complex and/or sensitive matters to the appropriate staff.
- Attends and participates in employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations.
- Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Analytical skills. Observes, evaluates, and applies quantitative and qualitative data to solving problems. Able to both diagnose problems and offer solutions that are aligned with the organization’s position and role.

- Strong working knowledge of employment law, HR policies, and industry best practices.
- Proficiency in HRIS platforms and Microsoft Office Suite.

- Experience working in a unionized environment governed by a collective bargaining agreement.
- Demonstrated success in developing and implementing employee engagement, retention, and inclusion initiatives.
- Experience advising senior leadership across various departments and disciplines.
Starting salary is $74,000 - $80,000. Excellent benefits include a generous Paid Time Off policy, medical, dental and vision insurance; 401(k) plan with an employer match; life and long-term disability insurance, and generous paid holidays.
