Nature of Work

THIS RECRUITMENT IS A SUPPLEMENTAL POSTING TO THE ORIGINAL RECRUITMENT. Strenuous manual or specialized semiskilled work. Work involves the collection of garbage and rubbish, or the performance of semiskilled tasks. Work normally requires the carrying of heavy containers of garbage and the dumping of the contents into the truck. Employees in this class may also work as backup members of regular crews or for emergency work, such as collecting dead animals, or picking up from selected homes that were bypassed. Employees are often in daily contact with the public and have constant exposure to objectionable materials, odors, or undesirable working conditions. Employees usually work under the direct supervision of a Waste Collector Operator, Waste Equipment Operator, or designee.

Essential Functions

  1. Carries large garbage cans to collection point and dumps contents into large empty container. Continues this process until the container is full and carries full container to truck and empties it into receiver.
  2. Rides side/rear platform of Packer truck and assists driver by giving directions when backing of truck is required.
  3. Operates controls on packing mechanism and signals driver when loading is completed.
  4. Picks ups dead animals upon notification.
  5. May operate normal dump or pick-up truck.
  6. Occasionally answers questions from the public concerning refuse collections.
  7. Sweeps streets, curbs, sidewalks, and alleys. Uses brooms, shovels, and pushcarts. Loads sweepings into containers, bins, or trucks.
  8. Collects side street rubbish and loads trucks with the use of shovel or pitchfork.
  9. Assists Waste Equipment Operators by pushing trash into piles to be picked up.
  10. Assists in spotting trucks or cranes and notifying operators of obstacles in the path of vehicles.
  11. Washes and cleans vehicles and assists operators in making minor adjustments.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Six (6) months experience performing strenuous manual work for extended periods.
  2. A valid driver's license from any state (Equivalent to the State of Florida Class E) may be utilized upon application, however prior to appointment a State of Florida Driver's License (Class E or higher) must be presented to the Department of Human Resources and must be maintained valid throughout employment in the classification. A Commercial Driver's License (Class B) is desirable.
  3. Must be willing to work evenings, nights and weekends on a regular basis.

Selection Preference for City Residents

In accordance with APM 2-02, applicants for classified positions who are City of Miami residents and new hires will receive preference in selection from interview ranking bands provided that any two (2) of the following documents are submitted with the employment application and again at time of interview:

  • Utility bill dated within 60 days of the date of submission
  • Valid Florida Driver License or State-issued I.D.
  • Property Tax Statement dated within 1 year of the date of submission
  • Properly executed valid lease agreement
  • Homestead Exemption dated within 1 year of the date of submission
  • Motor Vehicle Registration dated within 90 days of the date of submission
  • Official school records or transcripts, dated within 90 days of the date of submission
  • W-2 (or 1099) Tax Form dated within 1 year of the date of submission

Selection preference within the same ranking band resulting from an interview process will be granted in the following order: 1) preference eligible veterans, 2) active City of Miami employees, 3) City of Miami residents, 4) all others.
