• Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License issued by the state of North Carolina.

• GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
• Performs responsible semi-skilled work operating a refuse collection vehicle in the collection of solid waste;
• Does related work as required;
• Work is performed under regular supervision.
• Limited supervision is exercised over assigned crew members.

TYPICAL TASKS:

• Operates refuse collection truck picking up refuse from houses on a prescribed route;
• Operated hydraulic mechanisms for compressing and dumping refuse;
• Transports refuse to prescribed disposal areas;
• Drives and operates truck to collect household appliances, furniture and unusually large amounts of trash;
• Assists with snow and ice control as needed;
• Cleans refuse truck and equipment, performs preventative maintenance on equipment;
• Supervises personnel assigned to truck;
• Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• General knowledge of the operation and servicing of automotive equipment;
• General knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation;
• General knowledge of safe driving practices an occupational hazards of the work;
• Skill in the operation of automotive equipment;
• Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions;
• Ability to detect signs of the mechanical failure of the automotive and packing equipment;

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the high school and experience in performance of heavy manual work and in the operation of heavy automotive equipment.
