ENTRY SALARY: $43,282.47 annually
POSITIONS OPEN CONTINUOUSLY - WILL FILL AS NEEDED
Under general direction, the Solid Waste Equipment Operator drives, operates, and assists in the maintenance of all rear, side-loading, and front-loading, grapple truck, roll-off, and tractor trailer solid waste collection trucks, along with other heavy equipment on assigned routes and in all weather conditions.
Essential Functions
Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following duties, knowledge, and skills. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Drives, operates, and assists in the maintenance of all front, rear, and/or side-loading solid waste trucks, "jaws" trucks, and transfer tractor trailer trucks used for collection, transfer, and disposal of waste, trash, or recycling on assigned routes; navigates streets and City geography, maintains safe driving practices, and makes all collection stops.
- Checks, evaluates, and reviews the condition of trucks and equipment; reports needed repairs; directs and assists workers; performs pre- and post-trip inspections daily.
- Lines up the solid waste vehicle to refuse container bins, activates controls to raise and dump bins, and ensures proper placement to prevent damage and interference with traffic.
- Learns and applies skills in operating roll-offs; performs manual labor for refuse pickup at residential, commercial, park, and beach facilities.
- Performs minor repairs and adjustments to vehicles and equipment; monitors routine maintenance to ensure operational readiness.
- Responds to questions, complaints, and service requests professionally, referring major issues to supervisors.
- Dumps waste at designated locations; maintains cleanliness of trucks.
- Prepares daily reports and records collection activities, tracking issues addressed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment
A valid State driver's license is required. A Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) must be maintained, depending on the vehicle operated.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent, with two years of experience driving heavy-duty equipment or one year as a Solid Waste Worker with CDL training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
