Overview
The County of Volusia is seeking a Senior Maintenance Worker for the Solid Waste Division. This position will be located at the Tomoka Farms Road Landfill in Port Orange, Florida, and will be responsible for semi-skilled manual labor in a wide variety of construction and maintenance tasks. The candidate must be able to learn about solid waste, recycling screening and household hazardous waste and have customer service experience.
The hiring rate for this position is $16.72 hourly plus a $1.00 per hour incentive with a Class B Florida Commercial Driver's License for regular and overtime worked (not included in the base wage).
This position is posted on a continuous basis and may close without notice.
Responsibilities
- Performs work at the lower levels.
- Operates commercial power mowers, chainsaws, circular saws, reciprocating saws, brush cutter, edger and clippers, power washers, ATVs and other equipment used in yard maintenance.
- May operate and maintain Freon removal machine.
- Operates various types of equipment including, but not limited to: trucks, tractors, skid steers, forklifts, dump trucks, roll-off truck, front-end loader, etc.
- May work to provide customer service at customer convenience center at the landfill and/or transfer station.
- May be responsible for sorting and packaging materials such as household waste, electronics, batteries, and other items received at household hazardous waste site.
- May serve as a lead worker on a small work crew.
- May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.
- Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
- Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
- Responds to emergency situations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High School diploma or GED and one (1) year of experience as a Maintenance Worker or two (2) years of experience in construction and/or general maintenance work.
A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's license at time of hire.
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's license within thirty (30) days of hire.
The preferred candidate, having met the minimum requirements, will have a valid Florida CDL Class B or higher, and must have at least two (2) years of customer service experience.
Experience working with Solid Waste, Recycling, or Household Hazardous Waste is a plus!
NOTE: A pre-employment skills test may be required.

- Knowledge of equipment used in maintenance, grounds keeping, and construction.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to safe operation of this equipment.

ADA REQUIREMENTS:
Physical Demands: Ability to see, talk, and hear. Visual acuity (peripheral vision, depth perception) to operate motorized vehicles and other equipment. Peripheral vision. Ability to pull, push, lift, carry 50 lbs, grasp, handle, climb, balance, reach overhead, bend and stoop. Ability to traverse uneven, wet or broken terrain.
Environmental Demands: Outside work. Ability to tolerate inclement weather, including heat, humidity, wind and cold. May require exposure to chemicals, dust, insects, noise, fumes and other odors.
Mental Demands: Ability to read and comprehend safety instructions, procedures, floor plans, memos, and directions. Ability to write simple sentences relaying information. Ability to perform basic math such as addition and subtraction.
