Overview
This job involves responsibility for performing technical laboratory work at the Allen Harim wastewater treatment plant and potable water treatment system. All results are used for the efficient operation and maintenance of the wastewater plant and potable water system.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Knowledge Supports Allen Harim’s Vision, Mission and Values
- Supervises, trains, schedules and evaluates wastewater and wastewater operators for the Harbeson Plant
- Inspects plant machinery, equipment, grounds and facilities to determine need for repair or corrective actions
- Keeps time records, prepares and submits reports and schedules work staff
- Estimates materials and supplies needed
- Investigates and responds to complaints
- Responds to emergencies
- Directs and may participate in the safe and efficient operation of vehicles and equipment
- Inspects and monitors performance of contractors when assigned
- Performs special projects as assigned, recommends goals and objectives
- Knowledge and implementation of all aspects of the company’s sampling and testing programs
- Oversee the physical examinations of untreated and treated wastewater for suspended and percent solids
- Oversee the chemical oxygen demand (COD) tests on both untreated and treated wastewater
- Performs chemical tests on treated drinking water samples for phosphate, zinc, copper and pH
- Performs nitrite, ammonia as nitrogen, total phosphorus, and alkalinity tests
- Maintains records of all tests performed and keeps logs of plant operations
- All other duties as assigned

Education and/or Experience
- Four (4) years of acceptable operating experience in Wastewater Facilities of Class III or higher; two years of which must have been in a position of Direct Responsible Charge (DRC)
- Must be able to obtain a Base Level Water Operators License with Chemical Feed Endorsement
- Minimum of 2 years experience of prior supervisory experience in wastewater and proven track record that demonstrates leadership. Capacity to define problems collects data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
- Drinking water experience is a plus.
Knowledge/Skills
- Excellent knowledge of modern laboratory techniques, practices, and equipment used in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant and potable water treatment systems.
- Knowledge of the principles of bacteriology, biology, chemistry and physical examination of wastewater as they relate to wastewater analysis.
- Knowledge of the practices used and the equipment required in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant; skill in the operation and care of laboratory apparatus equipment, pumps, valves, and related mechanical and electrical equipment;
- Skilled in the performance and interpretation of laboratory tests and procedures; ability to understand and follow technical instructions
Supervisory Responsibilities
Exercises direct supervision over supervisory, maintenance, collections, and wastewater operations personnel.
Physical Demands
- Must have the ability to enter all areas of the plant and offices.
- Regularly sit at a desk for long periods of time; intermittently twist to reach equipment surrounding desk and while performing inspection activities
- May need to travel between satellite locations
- Ability to deal with variant temperatures both hot and cold
- Must be able to lift up 40lbs or more
Work Environment
Work environment is a production plant environment; must be able to be exposed to a variety of odors as well as presenting with hot and cold temperatures and a wet environment. Safety protection is provided.
