Overview
The County of Volusia is seeking an Accounting Specialist for the Fixed Assets section of the Accounting Division. This position is located in DeLand, Florida, and will be responsible for maintaining fixed asset records, recording auction surplus proceeds and coordinating the annual countywide inventory of tangible fixed assets.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for daily operations of the fixed assets section of the Accounting Division. Position is responsible for the data entry related to all county acquired tangible fixed assets (including additions, transfers and disposal of fixed assets). Identifies and implements changes that will enable the fixed assets section to operate more efficiently.
- Coordinates an annual countywide inventory of tangible fixed assets that is conducted by each divisions’ designated fixed asset custodians. Conducts annual meeting of fixed asset custodians in preparation for this annual inventory.
- Trains new fixed asset custodians as they are designated across all county departments and divisions.
- Prepares journal entries and supporting spreadsheets for recording auction surplus proceeds. Prepares other journal entries as required.
- Compiles, reviews, analyzes, and submits reports. Reports problems and/or concerns to immediate supervisor.
- Analyzes and resolves problems dealing with particular projects in a functional section.
- Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
- Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
- Responds to emergency situations.
- May be assigned to other locations based upon operational needs.
- Performs other duties as assigned, but not limited to reassignments or rotations.
Qualifications
- Two (2) years of experience as a Senior Accounting Clerk or graduation from high school or possession of GED certificate and five (5) years of advanced experience maintaining accounting records.
- A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements (For example, associate's degree and three (3) years of advanced experience maintaining accounting records).
- Knowledge of the laws, rules, and regulations relative to financial records within the unit of assignment.
- Knowledge of financial accounting software systems including CGI Advantage Financial software and Microsoft Office Excel.
- Ability to perform daily work involving written or numerical data and to make arithmetic calculations rapidly and accurately.
- Ability to audit accounting functions.
- Ability to be detailed and precise.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to make decisions and use leadership skills.
- Ability to be a problem solver.
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with internal and external customers including the general public, vendors, co-workers, and other departments.

- Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.
ADA REQUIREMENTS
Mental Demands: Ability to read and comprehend instructions, procedures, memos, financial reports, formatted financial statements, and letters. Ability to do general mathematical calculations including basic accounting and bookkeeping. Ability to write and speak clearly and concisely to relay information, data, and details to others.
Physical Demands: Sedentary work. Ability to lift up to 10 lbs. Ability to see, talk, finger dexterity for data entry. Ability to look at a CRT screen for long periods of time.
Environmental Demands: Inside work.
