Overview

Charleston-based, family-owned commercial real estate company seeks a skilled Accountant to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in property management accounting, be CAMS-certified or have extensive experience in that area and bring hands-on experience in accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls for real estate portfolios. This is a growth-oriented role, as the company is succession planning. The new hire Accountant will train under the company’s long time Controller and grow into leading the accounting team.

Base pay range

$70,000.00/yr - $95,000.00/yr

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations including A/R, A/P, bank reconciliations, and general ledger maintenance.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for multiple real estate entities.
  • Develop budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections for properties and investments.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and CAMS (Community Association Management Services) standards.
  • Work closely with property managers to reconcile CAM, rent rolls, lease abstracts, and capital expenditures.
  • Lead annual audit and tax preparation processes in coordination with external CPAs.
  • Maintain internal controls and accounting procedures for multiple property entities and investment structures (LLCs, partnerships, etc.).
  • Supervise and mentor junior accounting staff and manage accounting software systems.
  • Assist ownership with financial analysis, investor reporting, and ad hoc reports.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred but not required).
  • Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience in real estate investment or property management.
  • CAMS certification
  • Proficiency in property management accounting software (e.g., AppFolio, Yardi, Buildium, or similar).
  • Strong understanding of real estate financials including CAM reconciliation, lease accounting, and capital improvements.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Attributes

  • Familiarity with multi-entity real estate structures (LLCs, partnerships).
  • Experience managing HOAs or condominium financials a plus.
  • High integrity, discretion with confidential information, and a proactive mindset.
  • Hands on, comfortable not only helping lead a small team but involved in the day to day accounting duties.
