Job Summary: The Unit Secretary handles administrative duties within the department and performs clerical tasks to maintain an organized healthcare environment, allowing medical staff to focus on patient care. He or she also maintains communication between the patient and clinical staff.
Essential Functions:
- Consistently demonstrates an outward mindset and puts forth exemplary effort in achieving goals that help others succeed.
- Communicates with clinical staff to gather all necessary patient information.
- Answers phones, makes copies, and maintains office supplies.
- Handles patient inquiries promptly and appropriately.
- Communicates department needs related to ED patients.
- Assists providers in reaching on-call specialists and primary care providers.
- Prepares transfer paperwork.
- Communicates transfer needs to receiving facilities and EMS agencies.
Minimum Qualifications: Working knowledge of English grammar. High school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of related experience required, or a comparable combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Must possess interpersonal skills to deal effectively and courteously with diverse patients, doctors, internal callers, and healthcare personnel, while maintaining strict medical ethics. Ability to understand oral and written instructions. Knowledge of medical terminology and secretarial experience is preferred.
Working Conditions: Must work in a busy office and public environment, maintaining a friendly demeanor during all interactions with diverse populations, including physicians, nurses, and patient family members. Potential exposure to blood, body fluids, and contagious diseases.
Physical Requirements: Constantly requires visual acuity, handling/grasping/feeling, bending/twisting, stooping/kneeling/crouching, talking/hearing, and lifting/carrying 1 to 25 lbs. Frequently involves standing, sitting, walking, reaching, pushing, and pulling.
