Overview

Four 10-hour shifts: M-F, 6:30AM to 4:30PM. The Unit Secretary performs a variety of clerical tasks involved in preparing, maintaining and processing patient and unit activities, data and records. $1,000 sign-on bonus for offers accepted by November 30, 2025. Terms and conditions apply.

Responsibilities

  • Perform clerical tasks involved in preparing, maintaining and processing patient and unit activities, data and records.
  • Handle, transportation, access to and/or contact with medications and related supplies (as applicable).

Experience

  • Experience REQUIRED: N/A
  • Experience PREFERRED: Previous experience setting up and maintaining office systems (organizational skills); Previous experience with medical insurance, MIS, and medical terminology; Previous experience in a health care setting; Previous experience with Microsoft Office software; Previous experience with use of EMR

Education/Training

  • Education/training REQUIRED: High School Diploma or GED
  • Education/training PREFERRED: Completion of a Medical Terminology course

Independent Action

  • Able to perform daily activities with minimal supervision; Self-directed in the accomplishment of routine activities.
  • Issues involving violations of VCUHS policy or procedure, sensitive conflicts, or unusual matters should be brought to the attention of the Nurse Manager (or designee) promptly as warranted by immediacy of the issue.
  • Job duties may include the handling, transportation, access to and/or contact with medications and related supplies.

Additional Position Requirements

  • Unit Secretaries work all three shifts, weekends and holidays.
  • Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with the Nurse Manager.
  • Schedules including shift rotations and hours of work may be adjusted to meet staffing requirements or the best interest of the work unit.

  • Physical: Lifting up to 50 lbs. Activities include prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, frequent bending, walking, repetitive motion.
  • Mental/Sensory: Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, logical thinking.
  • Emotional: Able to handle multiple priorities, frequent and intense customer interactions, noisy environment, able to adapt to frequent change.
