Overview
Washington Unified School District is hiring for a School Secretary III at a senior high school. Under general supervision, to act as secretary and receptionist at a senior high school; to perform a wide variety of responsible clerical work of more than average difficulty; to assist the principal by relieving him of routine administrative and clerical detail; and to do related work as required. This position distinguishes itself from School Secretary II through greater complexity of records, public contact, and stenographic requirements.
Base pay
$32.00/hr
Qualifications
Knowledge: Office methods and practices, including filing systems, receptionist and telephone techniques, and letter and report writing; English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; office machines and ability to demonstrate skill in their operation.
Ability: Learn and interpret rules, laws and policies and apply them with good judgment in a variety of situations; perform difficult and responsible clerical work with accuracy and speed; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; make arithmetical calculations quickly and accurately; prepare and maintain accurate and complete records and reports; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with children and adults; type at a speed of not less than 50 words a minute from clear copy; take dictation at not less than 100 words a minute and transcribe it accurately.
Training and experience: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical path is four years of increasingly responsible clerical and stenographic experience, preferably involving frequent contact with the public.
Physical Abilities: Sustained keyboard use; prolonged typing and data entry; frequent sitting; adequate visual and auditory abilities; ability to bend, stoop, reach, and lift up to 30 pounds on occasion.
Responsibilities
- Performs secretarial and clerical duties for a senior high school principal; interviews office visitors and telephone callers, provides information or refers to appropriate sources, and schedules appointments with the principal.
- Takes and transcribes dictation, types letters, reports, bulletins, memoranda and other documents; maintains time sheets for classified staff; assists with attendance; prepares correspondence and routine school communications.
- Receives, opens and routes mail; coordinates school and community activities held at the school; maintains active teacher correspondence and other files and records; compiles and prepares reports.
- Operates copying and duplicating equipment and assists with office workflow as required.
