Special Education Secretary (.5 FTE) - Grizzell MS

Reports to: Building Principal

Department: Academics and Student Learning

Job Status: FLSA Overtime Eligible

Terms of Employment: 211 days (183 days; 8 paid holidays); 4 hours per day excluding lunch. Work year to be established by the Board.

Salary Range: $21.49/hr - $23.75/hr

Position Summary

To assist with efficient compliance to state-mandated special education procedures in the building.

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or training and experience that are considered equivalent.
  • A reasonable knowledge of computer, filing, and office equipment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with adults and children, in person and via the telephone or email.
  • Ability to set priorities and work well under pressure.
  • Must be detailed oriented and have the ability to work without direction.
  • Courteous and friendly personality.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Arranges meetings between staff members and parents to obtain permission to test, determine eligibility for special education services, and sign required forms as requested by staff members and/or parents.
  • Maintains an ample supply of forms currently required by law for special education placement.
  • Maintains current program participation and event codes in the Education Management Information System (EMIS) for each special education student.
  • Maintains current and accurate EMIS information to the Central Office for State reporting.
  • Assists in scheduling and notifying staff members and parents of annual Individualized Education Program (IEP) reviews and three-year reevaluations for special education students.
  • Assists in scheduling and notifying staff members and parents of Section 504 on RTI meetings.
  • Maintains an accurate, duplicate, confidential file for each special education student in the building; sends original file to Central Office.
  • Processes confidential correspondence between staff members, Central Office personnel, parents of special education students, and private psychologists, psychiatrists, physicians.
  • Obtains, organizes and distributes pertinent data regarding special education students or programs, as requested.
  • Screens, then greets visitors, and helps maintain building security.
  • Withdraws students and records student attendance in accordance with state laws and Board policy.
  • Troubleshoots copier related issues.
  • Performs clinic duties as needed; such as, dispensing medication, first aid, etc.
  • Places, receives, and correctly forwards telephone calls to voice mailboxes or classroom phones.
  • Distributes incoming mail; U.S., intra-district, UPS, etc.
  • Ensures the safety of students.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative professional relationships.
  • Maintains confidentiality and respect for confidential information at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee.
