Overview

American Sign Language Interpreter/HR Representative is responsible for facilitating communication between hearing and deaf or hard of hearing individuals in manufacturing and/or office environments using American Sign Language. This position serves as a liaison for deaf or hard of hearing employees, supports trades training, and may assist with other HR functions within the department. The role reports to the Director of Ethics & Compliance and requires the ability to obtain a government security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Take personal responsibility for your own safety through hazard identification and mitigation, ensure practices/processes are safely executed, and communicate safety concerns while modeling safe behaviors.
  • Utilize BIW’s business operating system (BOS) to execute work and communicate daily progress.
  • Work with the team to schedule employee interactions and communicate when additional support is needed.
  • Keep up to date on all required training, both internal and external, and collaborate with leadership to pursue training opportunities for personal and professional growth.
  • Collaborate with various internal customers to provide necessary ASL support and report any identified problems to leadership for corrective action to prevent recurrence.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in daily processes and lead efforts to complete corrective actions to capitalize on those opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Education: A High School Diploma or GED is required; a college degree in ASL is preferred.
  • Experience: 3+ years of ASL interpretation experience is required.
  • Licenses/Certification: Limited Interpreter License in the State of Maine required; Certified Interpreter License preferred. RID-certified interpreters qualified for the State of Maine Certified Interpreter License, but not yet licensed, may also apply.
  • Security: Must be able to obtain a secret security clearance.
  • Language: Expert understanding of both ASL and English is required.
  • Knowledge: Cultural knowledge about the deaf community is preferred.
  • Interpretation capacity: Must be able to interpret at least 90 minutes solo and 8 hours with a supporting interpreter.
  • Ethics: Must follow the code of ethics established by RID.
  • Communication: Clearly communicate messages verbally and in ASL.
  • Technology: Experience using devices and programs to provide remote interpreting is preferred.
  • Interpersonal: Must have strong interpersonal skills and experience supporting communications in manufacturing or heavy industry is preferred.
  • Scheduling: Must be flexible to work scheduled assignments during any of the three shifts.
