We’re looking for compassionate and solution orientated people with a desire to develop their leadership, communications and critical thinking skills while supporting the Red Cross mission.

Purpose: Work as part of the Disaster Action Team to support the local disaster response efforts, bringing hope and help to those impacted by disasters such as home fires or floods.

Location(s): Frederick County

Responsibilities: Disaster Action Teams provide 24-hour emergency response to local disasters, particularly house fires, ensuring that those affected have access to resources for basic necessities such as food, shelter and clothing.

This position is responsible for the tasks involved in the Disaster Action Team program including:

  • Train and prepare for the position, serving 'on-call’ shifts each week;
  • Attend regularly scheduled team/DAT meetings, communicate regularly with the team;
  • Respond to local disasters such as home fires, flooding or storm damage within two hours;
  • Deliver immediate direct client assistance, in-person;
  • Work with 'on-scene’ lead to determine if additional resources/support is required;
  • Complete assigned projects and local response activities according to the needs of the DAT program. (Preparing vehicles, response materials, administrative support of the DAT program and other tasks assigned by the DAT Leader.)

Time Commitment: Hours are flexible. Volunteers may commit to fixed duty days or may be "on call." Typical disaster responses require 4-6 hours. Volunteers would need to be available at least 3-4 days per month. Commitment of at least 1 year.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to treat people with respect under all circumstances and instill trust in others;
  • Solid computer skills including use of internet search tools, video conferencing tools, intranet and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Successfully clear a standard background check and
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
