Description

Cardiac Anesthesia Providers are highly skilled health professionals working under the supervision of licensed anesthesiologists to implement anesthesia care plans. They possess advanced skills in managing patients with congenital heart disease in perioperative settings and work exclusively within the cardiac anesthesia care team environment, as defined by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). Their responsibilities include assisting in cardiac surgeries, catheterization lab procedures, electrophysiologic procedures, and administering anesthesia for cardiac imaging or non-cardiac procedures. Candidates should have a premedical background, a baccalaureate degree, and complete a comprehensive didactic and clinical program at the graduate level. They must be trained extensively in delivering high-quality anesthesia care, advanced patient monitoring, and additional education for managing patients on ECMO, cardiopulmonary bypass, and ventricular assist devices. Work schedules are designed to ensure optimal patient care and the safe, efficient operation of Children's National.

Qualifications

Minimum Education

  • Must have completed a Master's Degree from a CAAHEP-accredited Anesthesiologist Assistant Program.
  • Graduates prior to 2025 must have completed a master's degree in an approved nurse anesthesia program, including 24-36 months of coursework and at least 800 hours of clinical experience. Graduates in 2025 and onwards must complete a Doctorate of Nursing Anesthesia Practice (DNAP).

Minimum Work Experience

3 years of experience as an Anesthesiologist Assistant or Nurse Anesthetist (preferred).

Required Skills/Knowledge

  • Pretesting and calibrating anesthesia equipment, monitors, and delivery systems.
  • Collecting preoperative data and performing physical examinations.
  • Inserting venous, arterial, and invasive catheters.
  • Delivering drugs for induction and maintenance of anesthesia.
  • Managing regional anesthesia and airway management.
  • Supporting therapy with fluids and blood products.
  • Administering cardiovascular drugs and making intraoperative adjustments.
  • Ensuring safe transition from surgery to recovery and managing postoperative pain.
  • Participating in administrative, research, and educational activities.
  • Current CME credits required.

Required Licenses and Certifications

  • Anesthesiologist Assistant, Registered Nurse, and Registered Nurse Anesthetist upon hire.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within 30 days.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers upon hire.
