Job description

Salary level

Pay level for this position: GS 11-14: $63,163.00–$138,296.00

Major duties

  • Monitor network traffic and security alerts for malicious activities and indicators of compromise (IOCs).
  • Conduct incident response analysis during possible security breaches, coordinating remediation activities and ensuring effective communication.
  • Conduct digital forensic investigations to support incident resolution, compliance, and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform cyber threat intelligence analysis, including threat hunting, and manage Threat Intelligence Platforms (TIPs).
  • Proactively identify, analyze, and mitigate security risks by integrating threat intelligence into defensive strategies.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to enhance cybersecurity processes, response capabilities, and security posture.
  • Drive continuous improvement in cybersecurity operations through innovation and adoption of new detection technologies.
  • Mentor and train junior IT specialists on cybersecurity practices, tools, and operational procedures.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports and briefings for leadership on incident findings, risk assessments, and threat intelligence updates.
  • Stay current with emerging cybersecurity trends, tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) to enhance detection capabilities.

Specialized experience

GS-11: One year of specialized experience (SE) equivalent to GS-9. SE includes:

  • Experience advising management on technical issues related to planning, designing, developing, procuring, implementing, operating, and maintaining IT systems.
  • Experience monitoring and analyzing network traffic, logs and security alerts for basic IOCs and suspicious activities.
  • Experience supporting incident response efforts under supervision, including documenting incidents and escalating as needed.
  • Experience using common cybersecurity tools (e.g., SIEMs, IDS/IPS) and basic scripting or query skills to analyze security data.

GS-12: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-11. In addition to the above:

  • Experience detecting, analyzing, and responding to security threats; ability to independently lead initial incident response and remediation.
  • Experience contributing to security process improvements and integrating new tools or technologies into incident workflows.
  • Experience collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to resolve security incidents, communicate risks, and implement mitigations.
  • Experience overseeing critical IT initiatives aligned with organizational goals.

GS-13: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-12. In addition to the above:

  • Experience leading complex IT research and analysis, coordinating cross-departmental efforts, root cause analysis, and remediation strategies.
  • Experience with federal cybersecurity activities including recommending levels of security, implementing controls, evaluating tool results, or analyzing monitoring tools to detect abnormal activity.
  • Experience briefing executive leadership on high-level cybersecurity risks and threats.
  • Experience managing TIPs and threat intelligence operations, including collaboration with external intelligence-sharing communities.

GS-14: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-13. In addition to the above:

  • Experience using project management to coordinate cybersecurity initiatives.
  • Experience leading advanced cybersecurity engineering concepts (e.g., threat modeling, security automation, cloud-native security controls) to design and oversee secure IT systems.
  • Experience using IT to identify, forecast, analyze, and research automated systems to derive solutions.
  • Experience leading a technical team and communicating with subordinates, colleagues, stakeholders, partners, and executives to achieve results.

Key requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain a Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) Clearance.
  • Must meet the FBI’s Employment Eligibility requirements.

Education and experiential requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from a U.S. accredited college or university in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management.

Education may be substituted for specialized experience (SE) as follows:

  • GS-11: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR three full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree OR related LLM.
  • GS-12 and above: Education may not be substituted for SE at this grade level.

All degrees must be verified by submitting college transcripts.
